Nigerians are cruel people and you will see this attribute in full effect when someone has committed a fashion blunder. We take fashion very seriously in Nigeria, maybe too seriously because in an attempt to look trendy many Nigerians follow fashion blindly, without considering the weather, colours, body shape and other factors that should complement their style.

It is not as easy as it looks to dress like an off-duty supermodel. The outfits that look the most carefree aren’t just thrown together. Lots of effort actually goes into looking that effortless. Having a great sense of personal style often takes some work.

While you of course wear whatever makes you feel comfortable. There is nothing wrong with imitation. In fact, it is said that the greatest ideas often come from imitation where fashion imitation will go wrong though is when you don't put your fashion factors into consideration before jumping into it. Which is something many Nigerians are guilty of.

This article highlights the 4 most common fashion factors usually overlooked by Nigerians.

Disregarding the weather

There exist different clothes for different seasons in the west because it would be suicidal to wear summer clothes in winter or winter clothes in summer. Apparently, a number of Nigerians don't understand this because odd as it is, you will see someone in Lagos wearing a puffer jacket or rain boots in the middle of the dry season. Regardless of how trendy an outfit might be, it's just wiser to take into consideration the difference in our weather and that of the west.

Colour blocking

While it may initially be pleasing to the eye to match colours in an outfit, it can often come across as tacky when you see someone dressed in lemon green from head to toe. A more sophisticated way to achieve a similar look is to opt for different shades of the same colour. This will create more visual interest and depth. Black and white is a timeless and chic combination that is always sure to please.

Sizing

Many women find it difficult to fit into smaller clothes if they are larger in size. Also, when wearing dresses that show cleavage, choose undergarments of the correct size so that the breasts don't threaten to spill out. There's a reason clothes are made in sizes. Not every piece of clothing sized for a slim girl can fit into a bigger girl. Also, not every outfit sized for a bigger girl can look good on a slim girl.

Over-accessorizing

We know you own lots of necklaces and it is not wrong to wear them all. This doesn't mean all your jewellery should be worn at the same time though. Over-accessorizing is one of the worst fashion mistakes one can make because it takes the attention off your outfit and puts too much attention on the accessories which isn’t often appealing. Hence, taking the attraction out of your outfit.

You may go out feeling great about your outfit and the next thing, you have become a viral meme across social media. Learning about fashion is important, what's more, important is not ending up as a bad meme.
