There are certain conversations nobody prepares you for as an adult. Telling your friend that the person they like doesn't like them back is one. Telling them that their partner is cheating is another. But telling your friend that they have body odour? Ah. Suddenly, you don't know how to speak English again.

What do you even say? <b><i>“Babe, I love you, but something is happening in this department”?</i></b> And what if they get offended? What if they start avoiding you? What if they genuinely don't know and you've been letting them walk around like this because you don't want to hurt their feelings?

Look, nobody wants to be the friend who embarrasses somebody over something they might not even realise is happening. But if you care about someone, you should be able to tell them the truth, especially when it's something they can do something about.

So, if your friend needs a little intervention in the hygiene department, here are seven ways to approach the conversation without making it unnecessarily awkward.

1. Tell Them Privately. Please, Have Some Home Training.

First things first: this is not a group discussion. Don't announce it in front of your mutual friends, make a joke about it at dinner, or start spraying perfume dramatically whenever they come near you. You're trying to help, not produce a Nollywood humiliation scene.

Find a moment when it's just the two of you and bring it up gently. They might feel embarrassed regardless, but at least you're giving them the dignity of not having an audience.

Sometimes, trying too hard to soften the message makes the whole thing more confusing.

You can say, “Babe, I wanted to tell you something a little awkward because I care about you. I've noticed some body odour recently, and I thought you'd want someone to tell you privately.”

That's it. No long speech. No “I don't know how to say this.” No dramatic sighing before you deliver the news.

It's an uncomfortable conversation, not a season finale.

3. If It's Happening Right Now, Offer a Practical Solution

Maybe you're out together, it's hot, everybody has been walking around Lagos in this heat, and you notice your friend smells a little sweaty.

If the situation is temporary, you can offer to stop somewhere to freshen up, get wipes, or buy deodorant if they want it. You could say, “This heat is doing the absolute most. Should we get something to freshen up before we go?”

Just make sure you're not using the offer as a passive-aggressive way to announce that they smell. If the issue is recurring, a proper private conversation is kinder than dropping hints forever.

We know. Humour is how we survive awkward situations in this country. But please, resist the urge to say things like, “Babe, your armpit is fighting for its life,” or “Something died in this room.”

It might get a laugh from everybody else, but your friend could remember that embarrassment long after the joke has stopped being funny.

You can be warm without making them the punchline. If you want them to trust you with difficult things in the future, handle this one with care.

This is important. Body odour isn't always a sign that someone doesn't bathe. Sweat, clothing, stress, certain medications, and medical conditions can all play a role. Sometimes, a person can have good hygiene and still struggle with persistent odour.

So don't jump straight to “You need to bath properly” or start giving them a lecture about soap and water. You don't know what's going on, and neither does your nose.

Tell them what you've noticed without making assumptions about their character or cleanliness.

Even if you say it perfectly, your friend might still feel embarrassed or get upset. That's understandable. Nobody wants to hear that something about them is making other people uncomfortable.

Don't immediately switch to “I'm only telling you the truth!” or start listing every time you've noticed it. That will probably make things worse.

You can say, “I understand this might feel embarrassing. I wasn't trying to hurt your feelings. I'd rather tell you privately than have somebody else make fun of you.”

Then let them process it. You don't have to force them to thank you for your honesty on the spot.

7. If It Keeps Happening, Have the Conversation Again Kindly

You told them once, they said they'd look into it, and three weeks later, the situation is still giving you concern. Now what?

You can check in privately and ask if they've noticed it too. If the odour is persistent despite good hygiene, encourage them to speak with a healthcare professional rather than assuming they aren't trying hard enough.

You are allowed to be honest about something affecting your time together, but you don't need to police their body or make every outing a hygiene inspection.

The goal is to help your friend, not make them feel like they have to earn your friendship by smelling a particular way.
