The Dangote Refinery IPO gives Nigerian investors a chance to buy a stake in one of Africa’s biggest industrial projects. The offer is for shares in Dangote Petroleum Refinery and Petrochemicals FZE, with the company seeking to raise about ₦2.15 trillion from investors.

But before you rush to buy because it has “Dangote” on it and everyone is buzzing about it, or as a layman who is just getting into the stock market, here are five basic things to know about this particular offer before you hop on the bandwagon… or not.

An <a href="https://africanfinancials.com/document/ng-dangpr-2026-ps-00/">Initial Public Offering</a>, or IPO, is when a company offers shares to the public for the first time, allowing investors to become shareholders. In this case, Dangote Petroleum Refinery and Petrochemicals FZE is offering shares to the public.&nbsp;

An IPO does not mean guaranteed profit. The value of shares can rise or fall after listing, and investors can lose money, just like with other stocks. So, while an IPO can allow you to own part of a company, it also means putting your money at risk.

The Dangote Refinery IPO has a fixed offer price of ₦525 per share. The minimum application is 10 shares, meaning you can start with ₦5,250 before any applicable charges.

The company is offering 4.1 billion ordinary shares, which at ₦525 each gives a gross offer value of about ₦2.15 trillion. But you do not need millions of naira to participate. The minimum investment makes it possible for you and me to participate in the offer with a relatively small amount of money.

3. The IPO opens on September 14 and closes on October 13.

The subscription window is open for <a href="https://ipo.dangote.com/get-ready">approximately one month</a>. The opening date is 14 September 2026, and the closing date is 13 October 2026. After the offer closes, applications will be processed and shares allotted according to the terms of the offer. The shares are expected to subsequently trade on the NGX, with the listing expected around November.

In simple terms, there is a difference between applying for the shares during the IPO and buying the shares later when they begin trading on the stock market.

4. You are not buying 10% of Dangote Refinery

You may have seen earlier reports saying that Dangote planned to sell up to 10% of the refinery. However, the final offer is for 4.1 billion shares. Based on the company’s total shares after the offer, this represents roughly 3.3% of the company.

The existing shareholders will continue to own the overwhelming majority of the company. For instance, Aliko Dangote will continue to hold about 87% of his refinery.

5. The money raised is going towards expansion.

The company is issuing new shares and raising money for the business. According to reports, the IPO is aimed at supporting the refinery’s expansion programme.&nbsp;

Dangote plans to increase the refinery’s capacity from its current 700,000 barrels per day to approximately 1.4 million barrels per day. And that would give the refinery even greater capacity to supply refined petroleum products to Nigeria and international markets.&nbsp;

Now, at least, you have a little more knowledge about what the IPO is actually about.
